The Conservation Council wants the ACT government to implement water reduction and reuse options prior to pursuing a supply option.

However, if the government chooses to pursue a supply option, then of those that were presented by ACTEW at their recent Palette of Possibilities exhibition, the Tantangara Dam option, with a release of water via the Murrumbidgee, then pumping it into the Googong, seems to be the best option.

Why?

  • Any release of water down the Murrumbidgee River from the Tantangara will add to water flows and help improve the health of the river.
  • The water is stored in an existing dam - no expensive or time consuming construction needed.
  • The option is one of the cheapest.
  • The Tantangara Dam is a huge dam (252GL) that is much larger than all of Canberra's existing water storage capacity. This means we can store huge amounts of water if we want.
