Campaign Updates

1. Climate Change

 

The Climate Recovery Coalition will be meeting on Wednesday 4th July, starting at 7pm in the Conservation Council meeting room, 3 Childers st Acton. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month. Please contact Genevieve campaign@consact.org.au if you would like an agenda.

2. Survey Volunteers Needed
Would you like to spend some time outdoors? Could you conduct a simple survey of Nature Reserve users? Can you spare three hours on a weekend?

The Conservation Council is seeking volunteers to conduct a survey of users of the Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve in Gungahlin, in order to assist in the planning of conservation projects in the area.

Volunteers will work in pairs on a Saturday and/or Sunday between 28 July and 12 August, from 9.00am to 12.00 noon.

If you would like to assist with this important project, or if you would like more information, please contact Sarah Davies 6229 3210, or email bushcare@consact.org.au If you are unavailable at these times, but are interested in participating in similar projects in the future, please let us know.

3. Public consultation on Draft General Environment Protection Policy (EPP)
A draft EPP has been released for public consultation by the Environment Protection Authority. Written submissions to EPA GPO Box 158 Canberra ACT 2601 by COB 18 August 2007. The Draft EPP can be found on the DTAMS website http://www.tams.act.gov.au/

 

4. Water. The ACT Assembly Planning and Environment Committee has commenced.

The inquiry will investigate the best options for ACT Government investment in maintaining a sustainable water supply in the ACT. The Committee will look at a number of issues, including:

likely impacts of climate change; extent to which demand reduction strategies outlined in Think Water, Act Water have been implemented; international best practice principles and priorities for urban water management suitable for the ACT; the role of Canberra as Australia’s national capital and provider of water to the largest population in the Murray-Darling Basin; the relative merits of staged water restrictions as compared to a permanent water conservation strategy; maintaining the health of trees, sporting fields and gardens and the city’s Bush Capital character; the relative financial, environmental and potential health impacts of water capture and reuse practices.

1. Community Development Meets Climate Change

The Community Development Network of the ACT and Region presents a free forum to provide concerned citizens, community activists and community development workers with strategies to harness the existing public concern about climate change and direct it toward positive action.

2. Caring for Land: Prints and paintings responding to land

When: 9am – 4.30pm daily, 6 June – 28 October 2007
Australian National Botanic Gardens, Visitor Centre

The Caring for Land exhibition portrays artists’ responses to the land around Canberra in order to encourage viewers to explore their personal connection with the local environment. Artists represented: Antonia Aitken, Nicola Dickson, Jan Hogan, John Pratt and Jim Williams.

There is program of workshops and lunchtime talks associated with the exhibition, details can be found here.

3. Seminar: Sustainability in the Workplace, Fostering a Culture of Change

When: Thursday 5 July 9am – 4.30pm

Room F102, School of Resources, Environment and Society (Building 48), Linnaeus Way, Australian National University Cost $60 (includes lunch)

This will be an inspiring day with a focus on changing behaviour and fostering sustainability. The program will include a series of presentations and a panel discussion with a number of individuals who have a broad range of experience in driving sustainability-related change. This will be complemented by a practical workshop component, to draw out general approaches to fostering change and apply them to real situations in your workplace.
