Conservation Council Campaign Updates

1. Climate Update

Walk Against Warming will be held this year on the 6th of December to coincide with international climate talks at Poznań, where our Government will be debating further commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. The Conservation Council will keep you posted about this important event and you can check the website www.consact.org.au for details as the date gets closer. If you want to get in early for a t-shirt, give the Conservation Council a call on 6229 3208 or email Genevieve at campaign(at)consact.org.au

2. Transport Update

Light Rail Business Case

The ACT Government has contracted Price Waterhouse Coopers to develop a business case for light rail for the ACT. The business case is to be submitted to Infrastructure Australia in November to support the ACT bid for Building Australia Fund support to construct a light rail in Canberra. The Conservation Council has been invited to sit on the Reference Group for the development of the business case.

Light Rail for Canberra
We’ve got a great chance of achieving a light rail system for Canberra, helping to tackle the 25% of Canberra’s emissions that come from transport but it will take huge public support to make sure it happens. Vote now in our online poll to make light rail a reality for Canberra: www.consact.org.au/getontrack For more information call on 6229 3208 or email Genevieve at campaign(at)consact.org.au

3. Molonglo Update

Molonglo Forum

The public pre-election forum on the Molonglo urban development hosted by the ACT Collaboration on 17th September heard strong commitments from all election candidates on key issues related to the Molonglo development.

All candidates supported protection of the Central Molonglo woodlands in perpetuity, as well as strong support for protection of other woodland patches throughout east Molonglo, implementation of conservation leases and restoration of the river corridor. There was also general consensus for achievement of best practice sustainable urban design including solar orientation of streets and buildings, development of a range of affordable high energy efficiency housing, and establishment of a rapid transit public transport system in the early stages of the development.

Whatever the makeup of the next ACT Government, we will need to hold them to these commitments.

Molonglo Strategic Assessment

The ACT and Commonwealth Governments have agreed to undertake a Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Molonglo urban development proposal, as allowed under the EPBC Act. The draft terms of reference for the assessment are currently available for public comment by Monday 20 October.

If you only turn up to one event this year, then make it this one! With a tightly contested ACT election forecast, we are working hard to get the best possible commitments for cycling from our politicians; but they won’t know how important it is unless YOU turn up to the meeting, to show them that people who care about the environment also vote on this issue!
